Anthony C. Bruins I
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Johnson Space Center – Mission Control Center Systems (MCCS)
Project Manager/Leader
For the last 35 years, Anthony C. Bruins I has been working as a Visionary/Systems Architect, Systems Engineer, Scientist, and Innovator for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Houston, Texas. He has extensive experience in tactical and strategic thinking, planning, and execution; operations research and concepts; technology development; project leadership; project management; applied systems engineering; applied systems integration and testing; and the development of advanced processes and procedures to support engineering, planning, training, and operations.
Mr. Bruins has developed engineering curriculums with Dr. Jack V. Matson of Pennsylvania State University supporting creativity, innovation, and leadership for engineering students. He led a team of engineers, scientists, hardware and software developers, etc. to develop a 3D Interactive Digital Virtual Human that was anatomically precise, biomechanically accurate, and physiologically realistic, you could sever the bones and nerves, as well as simulate disease, dysfunction, and trauma running on a PC. He has been written about in Computer Graphics World Magazine, NASA Tech Briefs (two times), Atlantic Progress (Canada), NASA Research and Technology 1999-2004, Popular Science Magazine (two times), Houston Chronicle, Chicago Times, and his project was also shown on the Discovery Channel.
Mr. Bruins served as the Mission Control Center Systems (MCCS) Chief Architect leading a team of Systems Engineers to write the MCCS Vision for the Mission Control Center (MCC) during the December 2004 timeframe. In parallel, as the MCCS Secure Network Project Manager/Leader, he led a team of tactical and strategic engineers with diverse backgrounds to design, develop, integrate, and test security and network technologies implemented to support the 21st Century MCC based on developing a Mission Systems Secure Network System Architecture first of its kind ensuring that the MCCS are secure end-to-end. Mr. Bruins led a team of Security, Network, Performance, and RMA Engineers to define, document, and implement the MCCS Lockdown and Isolation Procedures as well as Alternate Operational Environments supporting mission and space operations for Human Spaceflight. The MCCS is where worldwide leaders in mission planning, training, test, and flight operations perform space exploration.
Mr. Bruins is the father of Systemic Intelligent Fast Failure (SIFF) a scientific and engineering methodology that is used to design, develop, integrate, and test world-class systems for mission design, test, training, and command and control supporting advanced ground systems paving the pave for future space exploration. SIFF teaches engineers, scientists, flight controllers, trainers, operators, etc. how to use the left/right side of the brain, 10 levels of the mind, and senses at the same time. As a result, they learn to embrace FAILURE as a learning tool that supports the unleashing and igniting of the creative and innovative spirit solving complex challenges and real world problems.
Mr. Bruins has also worked with the Executive Director of the Center for NanoSpace Technologies (CNT) to redesign NASA’s existing spacesuit for Mars exploration at the systems level utilizing Nanotechnology, Nanoelectronics, MicroElectro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), and other advanced technologies. Mr. Bruins worked with Lt. Colonel Douglas Perrenod of the United States Air Force to investigate utilizing the 3D Interactive Digital Virtual Human to develop countermeasures for “pilot” head/neck and spinal cord injuries during seat ejection in the F-16 and other advanced aircrafts supporting the war in Iraq.
Mr. Bruins worked with Dr. Kevin Montgomery, Director of the Biocomputational Center, at Stanford University investigating teleoperations and telemedicine technologies, advanced motion capture devices and sensors, and state-of-the-art haptic technologies supporting advanced mission and space operations relative to going back to the Moon and onto Mars. He has filed 27 NASA Technology Disclosures/Patent Applications with the NASA-JSC Commercialization and Technology Transfer Office and one patent application with the United States Patent and Tradesmark Office titled “3D Interactive Digital Virtual Human.”
Mr. Bruins received the NASA Silver Snoopy Award on July 22, 2015. The NASA Silver Snoopy Award is NASA’s Highest Prestigious Award and only 1% of the NASA, Industry, and International Partners workforce receive this award annually.
Concurrent with his professional career at NASA-JSC, Mr. Bruins served as the Chief of the CNT Animal Sciences Division. He is an applied animal behaviorist, human-dog trainer-instructor-consultant, Dog Psychiastrist, and Dogchologist. He has over 35 years of experience in the animal behavior and psychology field, has created innovative methods for training puppies, dogs, and their owners “simultaneously” in basic and advanced obedience, problem behavioral modification, as well as housebreaking processes and procedures.
Mr. Bruins currently educates and consults humans and teaches puppy and dog training classes at Lone Star (Tomball) College. He has also developed the basic and advanced training curriculums supporting these classes and provided consultation to the Animal Behavior Science Institute, who certified him as a Dog Trainer in 1996, and Texas A&M University Law Enforcement and Security Training Division relative to educating and training police and police canines to support government programs. Mr. Bruins created the Animal Intelligence Agency (AIA) and Canine Communication and Control (C3), Inc. with the primary mission of serving humankind and animals. AIA is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to research and development as well as education supporting animals and their environments and the people who care for them in the Animal Industry. C3, Inc. is a for profit entity dedicated to developing cost-effective and quality products and services supporting personnel in the Animal Industry. He has organized, coordinated, developed, and authored the “Canine Communication and Control (C3)” requirements, processes, procedures as well as Human/Canine Certification Requirements and Standards to teach applied animal behavior and dog psychology (Dogchology) via distance and continuing education courses.
Mr. Bruins’ creative and innovative thinking and ideas have been cited in three books: “The Art of Innovation: Using Intelligent Fast Failure”, “Innovate or Die”, and “Better Than Perfect”. He has written the book “The 5 Minute Dog Trainer” based on the latest breakthroughs in Dog Psychology (Dogchology), Canine Communication and Control (C3), and goes by the name Dr. Pawsitive AKA “The Dog Psychiatrist and Dogchologist”.
